Habitat for Humanity

I have spent time with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity over the last 15 years and am always impressed by their team and the amount of good they do for their community. With limited resources and a lot of volunteers, they have helped hundreds of families get into new homes, on solid financial footing, and helped them raise their families with pride and dignity. It’s just a beautiful mission. To be there with SPX friends contributing a few days toward their mission goals is so rewarding. No matter the task at hand, you know you are helping a family rise up from difficult or unsafe circumstances. It’s also an opportunity to make new relationships within the SPX community and deepen existing friendships; the camaraderie and fellowship we share just makes it a fun way to serve.

Every time I go on a Habitat trip, I learn something new, and I contribute in large and small ways. My first year, I spent time painting and installing window blinds - which I had done before, but also learned the joy of installing door knobs, and realizing they made a satisfying clicking sound when everything was lined up and installed correctly.  Last year, more experienced volunteers taught me about installing windows and siding on a house. Even though I have limited experience and am not as strong as the men in the group, I have always found a way to contribute, and it brings me great joy knowing that I've been part of helping someone move into homeownership.

Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity was a meaningful and rewarding experience. It gave me the chance to help a family in need, learn new skills, and connect with others. I enjoyed meeting people from different backgrounds and working together as a team toward a common goal—giving someone a place to call home.  You don’t need to be a professional to make a difference. Just showing up with a willingness to help and being part of a team teaches you so much. I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back in such a hands-on and impactful way.
