We want all adults to connect through a small group. While Jesus preached and ministered to large crowds, he spent most of his time with his small group of 12 disciples, so we consider him the first small group leader. At SPX, most of our small groups meet to discuss the weekly message (homily) we hear at Mass. We also have small groups for those interested in Becoming Catholic, Alpha Groups, and a Grief Group. Some groups run throughout the school year, while others meet for 5, 8, or 13 weeks. -

We need adults who enjoy people to help facilitate each of these groups. You don't need formal background in church teaching, as the "content" comes from Fr. Mike or video presentations. Most of our groups simply need people who like spending time with people, helping them feel welcome, noticing when they aren't there. Facilitators also send out emails (though that task can be delegated to a group member). Those who work with our grief ministry need the ability to sit with people as the experience and express sadness. Those who most enjoy grief ministry are usually described as a good listener who conveys empathy. Those who work with Alpha have a heart for helping people discover or rediscover Jesus' love. Alpha facilitators are fun people who love meeting with new people.Don't see yourself as a Facilitator? Perhaps you have the gift of hospitality. We find that groups that meet in homes almost always take on a more relaxed character. People feel at ease, and the group goes deeper faster. So, if you like having people over to your home, and you live in the greater Bowie area, consider hosting a small group. We will find and pair you with a facilitator to take care of the communications and the group dynamics while you simply provide a space for the meeting.
